The NBA Human Rights Institute (NBA - HRI) was established to promote and  protect the rule of law, independence of the legal profession effectively and efficiently and to advance human rights enforcement in Nigeria

. The  NBA  declares - HRI are as follows:

  • To set up a national action plan on Human Rights

  • To coordinate Human Rights Policies and Programs at the National and Branch Levels.

  • To coordinate the Human Rights Committees at the Branch Levels.

  • To promote, protect and enforce Human Rights under a just Rule of Law.

  • To adopt and implement standards, practices and instruments regarding human rights accepted and enacted by the comity of nations.

  • To promote and protect the independence of the judiciary and the legal profession in Nigeria.

  •  To set agenda on the rule of law initiative.

  • To monitor and ensure strict adherence to all court orders by governments, institutions, agencies and individuals.

  • To acquire and disseminate information concerning issues relating to human rights, judicial independence and the rule of law.

  • To establish and maintain relations with the International Bar Association Human Rights Institute.

  • To promote the objects, principles and aims of the Nigerian Bar Association.

  • To assist in developing and improving the image and status of the Nigerian Bar Association and members of the Legal Profession in General.

Membership
of the institute is open to all legal practitioners and law firms in Nigeria interested in pursuing the objects of the institute and upon fulfillment of the membership requirements as stated by the Membership Sub-committee of the Institute.

The NBA - HRI is headed at all times by a Legal Practitioner who has not less than ten years post call experience in the practice of the profession and who is of course a full fledged member of the Nigerian Bar Association.

The NBA - HRI is seeking to partner with International Organisations such as the UN, AU, and EU, African Commission on Human & Peoples Rights and other Donor Agencies and Independent Funding Bodies.

As the activities of the institute expands the funding required for basic infrastructure required to maintain the institute (such as staff, premises, travel and office equipments) must be paid out of our own resources.

If activities expand, so must this infrastructure. Without increased support from members the NBA - HRI would be unable to carry out or maintain any level of activity and this is a funding gap only members of the profession can fill.
